Some of the other POW articles that my father has
is this book of sketches entitled "NOT AS BRIEFED". by C. Ross Greening.
This is the front of that book which was published in the early 1950's as a
Limited Edition. The sketches depict United States war planes in action against
the Germans and the Japanese. There are also some sketches of Stalag Luft I and
the men who were imprisoned there. My father received this book as a gift from
the author, C Ross Greening, after the war. I remember looking at this book
when I was a kid, and admiring the art work. My father has since given me this
book to keep as well as all of the articles that are displayed on this web
site.
in 2001 Ross's niece Karen Driscoll embarked on an
adventure of a life time, in her own words:
"The book I compiled and edited, with Ross
widow, Dot Greening, utilizes the same title with the addition of a subtitle
From the Doolittle Raid to a German Stalag. (We used the same title
for sentimental reasons) This book, published in 2001 by Washington State
University Press, is the story of my uncles life focusing mainly on his
war time experiences. It is totally in Ross words utilizing diaries,
letters and voice recordings he made in preparation for having a book written
about 10 years after the war. Unfortunately my uncle died of illness shortly
after the voice recordings were made and the author he had selected also died a
couple of years later! The material languished for 40 years. Dot tried to get
another author to take it on but did not succeedthey all said Too
much happened in his life to handle in one book. I was 15 when my uncle
died and some 40 years later I discovered the old box of the diaries and the
typed transcript of the voice recordings that Dot had prepared. The material
was dog eared and yellowed and all out of order. I decided to type up a
complete story for the family and one thing led to another and Ross alma
mater, Washington State University Press decided to publish it as a book. It
has a great many of the color paintings from the first Not As
Briefed together with a large number of other painting Ross had in his
personal log book and other sourcesall made during the war either while
he was an escaped POW or in prison camp."
